I turned my binoculars on the blue-and-white cabin several times during the day. No further appearance of the Alon look-alike, nor anyone else for that matter. I got a closer look when I went for an afternoon run on the beach. The cabin was dark and apparently empty. Whoever had been there must have left.

It still seemed strange enough that I mentioned it to Karen over drinks that evening.

She gave me a slightly condescending smile. “Sounds like you have too much time on your hands. But tell you what, I’ll check out who owns or rents the cabin. Do you know the address?”

“Yes, I looked when I went by earlier. It’s 229 Atlantic Avenue.”

She handed me her glass. “Why don’t you freshen this up while I make a quick phone call?”

When I got back out to the deck she said, “They’ll get back to me soon. In the meantime, I have to say that your analysis of the blood type business threw a wrench into things. I was really hoping we had a lead.”

“I know, I’m sorry. I just don’t see any way that it makes sense.”

“Yeah, I got that. I’m afraid it means that I’m going to have to try digging under some more rocks. It’s going to screw up our vacation plans, but I’m going to have to revisit what I can learn about the victims.”

Her phone rang before that had time to sink in. She answered and listened for a minute. Then she said, “Okay, thanks for the fast work,” and disconnected.

“Well, that seems simple enough,” she said. “The cabin’s a rental property managed by one of the local agencies. It’s been vacant for the last week and the only people who’ve been there are maintenance folk.”

“Okay, I guess that’s who I must have seen then. Thanks for checking. Not necessary, I know, but at least my curiosity’s satisfied.” I paused to finish my drink. “What’s the bad news about your investigation? And our vacation?”

She sighed. “We’ve got to go back to hunting for something that’ll give us a new lead. Helen and I are going to go up to Orono tomorrow, where the University of Maine student was taken. It’s about 150 miles north of here. After that, I’m not sure. All we can do is try to turn up something that we’ve missed so far.”

Not what I wanted to hear, but what could I say?

“I’m disappointed, but I understand. Makes me wish even more that I’d been able to make sense out of the damn blood-type business.”

She leaned over and kissed me. “Not your fault. I’ll make it back here if I can. In the meantime, relax and enjoy the place.”
